Hypatia of Alexandria

Hypatia of Alexandria (c. 355/370 - 415 CE) was an Egyptian mathematician, astronomer, and Neoplatonist philosopher, regarded as one of the first female scientists in history. She was renowned for her teaching and commentaries on classical works in geometry, algebra, and astronomy, including those related to Diophantus, Apollonius, and Ptolemy. She is also credited with improvements to scientific instruments such as the astrolabe and the hydrometer, used in astronomical and physical studies. Her work played a crucial role in preserving and transmitting ancient scientific knowledge, and she remains a symbol of the intellectual legacy of the Alexandrian tradition.
