Mary Anning
Mary Anning (May 21, 1799 - March 9, 1847) was a British paleontologist whose discoveries transformed the study of fossils and the understanding of the history of life on Earth. Working along the cliffs of Lyme Regis, she made landmark finds including the first complete skeletons of ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs, as well as major contributions to the study of ammonites. Her observations helped establish that many species had become extinct, strongly influencing the early development of paleontology and historical geology. Despite lacking formal academic training, her rigor and empirical knowledge were widely respected by scientists of her time.
